Clean and Green
About the Analysis
The Clean & Green Block Analysis is conducted by the Downtown Improvement District each year to evaluate the condition of each of the district’s ninety-one blocks. Throughout the process, a team of trained assistants take an in-depth look at streetscape elements, aesthetic conditions, and possible obstructions to pedestrians downtown. The results are then compiled into a final report that outlines issues and obstructions, and focuses on creating a safe, clean, attractive, and pedestrian-friendly downtown.
Results
The 2009 Block Analysis was wrapped in August and the results are now available. In all, a total of 2,451 obstructions and issues were noted within the ninety-one blocks of the Downtown Improvement District. These issues range anywhere from broken sidewalk sections to dead or missing trees. A breakdown of the data collected is shown below.
As you can see in the table above, there were two categories that were not included in this year’s total. While brick areas in need of attention were noted and evaluated, they were not included in the final obstruction total due to the varying types of bricks and brick sections throughout downtown. Depending on the type of brick (or brick section) evaluated, the results could have greatly skewed the overall total.
The smoking receptacle category was not updated in the 2009 analysis. The 72 locations identified in 2008 are locations being reviewed for possible smoking receptacle placement in the future, based on cigarette litter trends and other anecdotal data. This category was not updated during the 2009 analysis since many of the locations have not changed over the past year.
In all, the total number of issues identified decreased by 768 obstructions from the previous analysis. This number is likely to decrease even more pending the completion of projects on Calhoun, Harrison, and Clay streets.
Block Reports
Results for each individual block are available in “block reports.” Each block report shows the inventory data collected and a list of notes taken during the analysis. Exact location information for each obstruction is available by contacting us here. To view a report for a specific block downtown, click on the block you wish to view on the map below.
Using Google Earth
As a way to solve some location-identification issues, Google Earth was used during the 2009 analysis to map an approximate location for each issue. In addition to a relative location, each issue is also tagged with a description of the obstruction and approximate latitude and longitude coordinates. The picture below shows a view of the Google Earth Analysis Database.
As you can see, each category of issue has a different symbol so that the viewer can easily recognize specific issues. Some areas may be highlighted with red or green strips, indicating that weed, debris, or litter removal is needed along that block face. This map will be continually updated throughout the year as obstructions are attended to and as new ones arise. Since block reports do not give location information for the issues listed, map views of the data collected are also available. Final Report
Each year, the Downtown Improvement District releases a final report that reviews the findings and results of the annual block analysis. The 2009 report gives an introduction to the analysis, a more in-depth look at the inventory and data collection process, and takes a look at various “problem-spots” identified throughout the district.
